Diagnostic techniques for immunoglobulin (Ig)E-mediated reactions to foods have improved considerably but the identification of other types of reactions lags behind. Immediate sensitivity reactions can involve vomiting and other gastrointestinal symptoms, anaphylactic collapse, angio-oedema, urticaria or asthma, all within an hour of ingesting very small amounts of the food concerned. There may also be features of the oral allergy syndrome, notably swelling of the lips and tingling of the mouth or throat.
