Noctural insominia and diurnal sleepiness were present in 240 of the 350 patients with clinically and biochemically well-substantiated neurogenic spasmophilic syndromes (NSS) of hypomagnesemia. They exhibited neurotic characteristics, with neuromuscular hyperexcitability, positive Chvostek and Trousseau signs, repetitive EEG discharges and manifested EEG phenomena of diffuse neuronal hypersynchrony, mainly generated by hyperpnoea. We carried out 8 hours of continuous night polysomnographic recordings, for sleep stages using the criteria of Rechtschaftemn and Kales (13) and Popoviciu et al. (11) in 35 selected patients with insomnia. All had sleep disturbances, including long periods of wakefulness states, which had clear-cut prevalence of the light slow wave sleep, with a diminution or even total absence of the deep slow wave sleep and with significant decrease of the duration and percentages of the REM sleep (being very often fragmented and atypical). In 25 cases we observed the frequent occurrence of bursts of epileptic-like, ample, slow polyspikes and of synusoidal waves, bilateral and synchronous, that were very obvious on the temporal regions. The authors think that these discharges originate from the oral region of the reticulate formation.
