Assessment of ship waste water treatment facilities from the public health viewpoint

In the state-owned shipbuilding company of Rostock, East Germany, ship waste water treatment plants have been conceived and tested since 1977. This includes the recently developed plant of KAREA 25 type. The waste water is purified biologically (activated sludge process) and disinfected through chlorination. In a continuous 10-day test performed at a land testing site, the values obtained for filterable material, biochemical oxygen demand and fecal coliforms were below the limit values set by the international shipping organization. Additional studies, such as the determination of the number of enterococci, the measurement of chemical oxygen consumption, cloudiness, and pH values, confirmed the efficiency of this plant for the purification of ship waste water.
