Protein profile of amniotic fluid in normal pregnancy

Amniotic fluid proteins were studied in normal pregnant women between 13 to 20 wk gestation (group I) and 36 to 40 wk gestation (group II). The total protein content was reduced to half its original level (group I) in group II i.e., with advancing gestational age. Using polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis the protein fractions transferrin, ceruloplasmin and alpha-1 globulins were found to increase significantly whereas the levels of immunoglobulins, alpha-2 macro-globulins and haptoglobins were significantly decreased in group II as compared to group I.(author)
