Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200 to 250 g were parathyroidectomized 9 to 10 days before the experiment and were switched from their stock diet to a diet low in inorganic phosphate 60 h before study. Acute hypercapnia increased plasma inorganic P without changing the glomerular filtration rate. Treatment with parathyrin 3 U/kg h during hypercapnia resulted in a plasma inorganic P value similar to that during hypercapnia alone. The phosphaturic action of parathyrin was restored by hypercapnia per se. The effect seemed to be independent of extracellular acidaemia, changes in plasma inorganic P and calcium, urinary pH and sodium and cyclic AMP excretion.
