An analysis of the echographic data (M-method) obtained during the examination of 45 patients with essential hypertension (EH0 and 48 patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (AH) showed a heterogeneous character of left-ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and structure and function of the left heart. It consists in that the level of diastolic arterial pressure is essential in EH but not a major factor in the development of LVH in patients with pulmonary AH. Patients with pulmonary AH exhibited high frequency of asymmetric hypertrophy of the interventricular septum (13.1 per cent) and highly significant activation of left-ventricular systole as compared with EH patients.
