Surgical treatment of obstructive cancers of the left colon. Value of lateral cecotomy

Among seventeen patients with an acute episode of intestinal obstruction due to a carcinoma of the left colon, seven were treated by a primary colonic resection without mortality. Ten patients with a complete obstruction were treated by an emergency caecostomy under local anesthesia. A colonic resection followed 4 to 8 days later and the closure of the caecostomy, 3 to 4 weeks later. No patient died in the post-operative period. It is concluded that caecostomy is both an efficient treatment of the obstruction and a good preparation to the secondary resection.
