The ependyma of sheep. II. The lateral cerebral ventricle

In 30 Merino sheep, we examined the ependyma on the lateral cerebral ventricle by light microscopy and on the nucleus caudatus and cornu ammonis also by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In most cases, we found a single layer of cuboidal ependymal cells and a little number of flat and cylindrical ones. In the folds and in some places of varying location we found more layers. The ependymal surface on the floor of the lateral ventricle was built characteristically: on the nucleus caudatus, the convex apical membranes were covered with microvilli and cilia arranged into bundles. On the cornu ammonis, there were "naked" places, alternating with microvilli, kinocilia, and short cilia. The microvilli formed around the apical membranes a polyedric pattern. We have not found any changes that could be related to the difference in sex.
