Recent findings on magnesium metabolism in ruminants are reviewed with reference to absorption from the digestive tract, distribution and function within the body and excretion via the kidneys. The main cause of hypomagnesaemic grass tetany is due to disturbed absorption of magnesium from the omasum; high concentrations of potassium and crude protein in young grass decrease the Mg absorption, while sodium deficiency has a negative influence on magnesium balance. It is concluded that a sudden change of diet from hay and concentrates to fresh grass results in decreased availability of Mg within the omasum. Prophylactic measures are discussed and described.
