Cost and performance of malaria surveillance: the patients' perspectives

The costs of 3 different types of malaria surveillance service were determined for 2 zones (Saraburi and Pakchong) in Thailand. All patients attending the surveillance points were interviewed using structured questionnaires. Preliminary results for Nov. 1985 showed that the average total costs (including travel, self-prescribed drugs and time costs) to patients consulting village malaria volunteers were lower than at village health centres and malaria clinics. Patients presented with headache or fever, or because they had travelled outside the village.
