Thirty-eight strains of Chlamydia trachomatis were isolated from 35 cases of neonatal conjunctivitis and 3 cases of infantile pneumonia from January 1983 to March 1985. In newborns with inclusion conjunctivitis, the sensitivity of direct examination by methods of Giemsa's and fluorescent monoclonal antibody staining were 57 per cent and 60 per cent of the isolation method respectively. Treatment of topical antibiotics with sulfonamide or chloramphenicol in newborns with conjunctivitis did not significantly affect the isolation rate of C. trachomatis. The onset of conjunctivitis in neonatal inclusion conjunctivitis developed at the age 6 .+-. 5 days and the age at onset of C. trachomatis associated pneumonia in newborns was 24 .+-. 5 days.
