Two examples of community initiatives and innovations in response to the progressive marginalization and increased vulnerability of shifting cultivation areas in northeast India are presented. In the first case (in Mokokchung district, Nagaland), farmers responded to the problem of declining productivity by implementing measures to lengthen the cycle of shifting cultivation. In the second case (in the Garo Hills district of Meghalaya), farmers responded to the problem through crop diversification and by shifting their staple production from swidden fields to terraces.
