Extent of yaws problem in India

A survey based upon questionnaires received from diferent parts of India showed that between 1983-Mid 1985, a total of 1349 yaws cases were diagnosed; 588 in 1983, 422 in 1984 and 339 in 1985 until June. Average annual incidence was 2.3 per 100,000 population in districts reporting the disease (range 0.14 to 5.0). Yaws was reported from 297 villages of 10 districts in 3 states namely Andhra Pradesh (3 districts), Madhya Pradesh (1 district) and Orissa (6 districts). While in Andhra Pradesh, Yaws occurred exclusively among tribal population. In Orrissa and Madhya Pradesh both tribal and non-tribal populations were affected.
