Falls in a geriatric department

In one year 175 falls were recorded in a geriatric department of 160 beds. 14 patients suffered major injuries, among them nine women with fracture of the proximal femur. The commonest place for falls to occur was at the bedside, and the largest number of major injuries took place while the patients were walking.
