It is noted that telecentres (where people can pay for the use of devices such as telephones, fax machines, computers) are currently opening thoughout Africa. They are seen as providing a much needed communications infrastructure to a continent poorly supplied by telecommunication facilities. The paper outlines the obstacles to rural women gaining from this technology, focusing on the situation in Bamshela, KwaZulu/Natal, South Africa.
