The medical and epidemiological significance of the introduction and establishment of Aedes albopictus in the USA Gulf States of Louisiana and Texas is discussed in relation to its spread into suitable habitats in the Caribbean and South America. The potential role of this mosquito as a vector of human diseases is reviewed with reference to its present role in the transmission of dengue fever in South East Asia, as is potential competition between A. albopictus and the native A. aegypti. Information is given on possible dispersal methods and steps which should be taken to monitor the spread of this mosquito.
