Comparative studies of two methods and two perfusates were made in canine kidneys preserved for 72 hours and 96 hours. High osmolarity of perfusate containing fluorocarbon, an excellent oxygen carrier, may play an essential role in improving graft viability. Continuous hypothermic perfusion yields better kidney survival rates for 72 hours than simple hypothermic storage. But at present simple hypothermic storage is a practical method of kidney preservation, especially when warm ischemic time of the donor kidney is comparatively short.
