In conclusion, this study shows that the emergency treatment of variceal hemorrhage can be safely undertaken by injection sclerotherapy using the fiberoptic endoscopy and combined peri-intravascular injection of sclerosant. The majority of major complications are related to the primary liver disease while the specific complication related to the procedure are few and can be treated conservatively with good results. Since there are no reliable criteria for the selection of patients requiring prophylactic sclerotherapy, endoscopic grading of varices and portal pressure may serve as guide lines.
