Experimental study of the relationship between cardionatrin and chronic congestive heart failure in rabbits

The natriuretic and diuretic effects of atrium extracts of rabbits with congestive heart failure were found to be greatly decreasing as compared with controls (P < 0.01), and observation from electron microscope indicated that the number of atrial specific granules, which contain cardionatrin, in congestive heart failure rabbits also decreased as compared with that in normal rabbits. Both results suggest that in congestive heart failure there is a decrease of cardionatrin in atrial tissue, and this may be due to its greatly compensative excretion into circulation. The present study also introduces a convenient method for producing chronic congestive heart failure. By use of a constricting operation on pulmonary artery to produce pulmonary hypertension, the rabbits develop right-sided congestive heart failure within several days.
