Gamma-ray induced erect and semi-erect mutants in Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp

Two nontwining, erect and two semierect mutants were obtained in the M2 (8000 single seed bulk) following 20 krad gamma irradiation of seeds of the variety C28. There were significant differences between the mutants in the M3 and M4 and C28 (data tabulated) with respect to plant height, branch number and yield/plant, the mutants giving the higher yields. Although the erect mutants showed a reduction in height compared with C28, their green yield/plant was higher as a result of more branching. The mutants were resistant or tolerant to unspecified nematodes.
