A rapid, simple method for measuring bronchial reactivity to inhaled histamine is described. The method was used to select asthmatic patients out of 575 school children aged 8-15 years. Sixteen subjects with positive past or present history of asthma showed a 20% fall in the one second forced-expiratory volume (FEV1) and 2 others who did not respond but had a FEV1/FVC (Forced Vital Capacity) at rest less than 85%, considered as having bronchospasme, made an incidence of asthma to approximately 3.2%. The cumulative dose of histamine of these subjects varied between 0.24 .mu.mol and 0.39 .mu.mol. Five out of 6 subjects who had no history of asthma responded to a cumulative dose of 0.39 .mu.mol. They were considered as representing a mild degree of bronchial hyperresponsiveness.
