Excised tomato roots infected with M. javanica were grown in a medium containing 10 or 20 mg/l of hydroxyurea (HU). In the HU treated roots, giant cells were small and contained large vacuoles, nuclei were amoeboidal with relatively small nucleoli, the cytoplasm was diffuse and few organelles such as mitochondria, dictyosomes, or endoplasmic reticulum were detected and walls were thin with less extensive ingrowths. It was concluded that HU induces resistance to M. javanica by suppressing giant cell development.
