Filshie clip system gains U.S. acceptance

Since the Filshie clip received Food and Drug Administration approval in 1996, more than 35,000 US women have been sterilized through use of this system. The 1996 US Collaborative Review of Sterilization study, which did not include the Filshie clip, recorded a failure rate of 36.5 pregnancies per 1000 procedures for laparoscopic spring clip applicators. It is expected that 10-year effectiveness data on the Filshie clip system, to be released in mid-1999, will document considerable improvements over rates recorded for other clip systems. Counseling for surgical sterilization should include careful consideration of the issue of regret in order to minimize the likelihood of requests for reversal.
