Aspects of female migration in India

Analyzing the secondary data of the 1979 Census brings out some of the characteristics of female migrants in India. Female migrants outnumber male migrants (more than double) yet their migration is largely limited to the rural-to-rural stream within the district of enumeration. As the distance of migration increases the sex ratio falls sharply. The proportion of the married females increased with the length of stay at the new destination. Whereas nine tenths of the rural-to-rural migrants have been found engaged in primary sector work their proportion declines with distance from the point of origin.
