With histochemical methods, including immunohistochemistry, the developing hair follicles and skin glands were studied in porcine fetuses of different gestational age (41 dGA until birth). Glycogen is predominantly found at the ental periphery of hair pegs. Their growing tips are free of glycogen, while in later stages it is stored in the outer epithelial root sheath. Cytokeratins of lower MW are evident early in hair follicle development, e.g. in the tip of growing hair pegs and skin glands. Later these substances are concentrated in cells around the growing hair fibre. High molecular cytokeratins show strongly positive rections only in sebaceous glands between 75 and 98 dGA. Keratinization in hair follicles starts at about 70 dGA with the developing hair canal, and intensifies around 80 dGA in the hair fibre. The adult keratinization pattern commences with about 85 dGA.
