This paper outlines the differences in hydrological conditions between arid (including semi-arid) and monsoon regions, and examines the mechanisms of sustainable and integrated water use for rice paddies in monsoon Asia, with specific examples from Japan, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Also examined are the effects of such water use on food production and vice versa. An attempt is made to refine a water use model and to combine it with global water and food analyses.
