This article summarizes the major milestones in melatonin's transition from being thought of as a skin-lightening factor in amphibians to a hormone in humans. It describes evidence, presented in detail by others at this conference, that melatonin may participate in sleep, behavioral and neuroendocrine rhythms, and in psychiatric disease states in humans.
