Contraceptive technology research in China has reflected the influence of scientific progress, changes in the country's social and economic situation, and the shifting needs and preferences of family planning clients. This article reviews briefly trends in steroid contraceptive research, including oral contraception, levonorgestrel-releasing IUDs, mifepristone, and "visiting pills." At present, and in response to international consensus, an emphasis is being placed on developing an emergency contraception regimen suitable for the Chinese context. Clinical research is investigating the efficacy of anordrin and mifepristone, both alone and in combination, for postcoital fertility control. Also of interest are preparations such as norgestrinone and quingestanol that may have a longer duration of action and protect against repeated unprotected intercourse.
