Every year the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) releases a report on The State of the World Population. The report has a different population theme each year, in 1997 the theme was "The Right to Choose", focusing on the International Conference on Population and Development's emphasis on the right of individuals to make their own choices regarding their reproductive health. In 1998, the theme of the report is the New Generations. This focus is motivated by increasing attention to changes in the demographic make up of the world's population. We will see striking changes in population structures in the future and these changes will have an impact on our lives. The discussion that follows below is based on the State of the World Population Report for 1998. However, the article is not as comprehensive as the actual report and in some cases, additional information has been added to adjust to regional interests.
