A 48K microcomputer is sufficient for almost complete computerization of a neonatal intensive care unit. The computerizing process starts upon delivery, when the input includes identification parameters and a delivery report. This is followed by the introduction of hospitalization parameters, such as alimentation, medication, physical signs and laboratory data. The output includes printed cards with identification details; complete computerized parenteral nutrition that can be interlinked with both oral and parenteral alimentation, with printed forms for the chart and the pharmacist; a computerized database containing all the data gathered during hospitalization (490 parameters), which can be retrieved, correlated with each other, and evaluated statistically; and automatic output of a discharge letter containing all details, from pregnancy to instructions for furture care.
