Correspondence includes 2 letters referring to a review by Ziegler of the role of breast-feeding in vertical transmission of HIV. The limited availability of HIV testing, under-five mortality figures, the safety of artificial feeding of infants, and lactational amenorrhoea as a contraceptive are considered as factors reducing the applicability of studies on HIV and breast-feeding for African countries.
