Pseudomyopathic changes in peripheral neuropathies

We describe 11 cases of chronic polyneuropathies of various types, origin and duration, with important muscle fiber hypertrophy and splitting and nuclear internalization, associated in variable proportions, which affected fibers irrespective of their histoenzymatic type and masked, in some cases, the neurogenic atrophy signs. In 5 cases, clinical muscle hypertrophy was present, too. We assume that chronic muscle partial denervation and reinnervation, consistently observed in all our cases, as well as the chronicity of the disease, associated with a yet unknown individual response are required by occurrence of pseudomyopathic changes.
