Metallothionein concentration in liver of Anabas increased due to short and long term exposures of the fish to non lethal doses of Cd and Hg. When the fish were treated with a mixture of metals and nonmetals and then transferred to toxicant free water there was a remarkable increase in the level of hepatic metallothionein. Increase in hepatic metallothionein within 30 days was comparatively depressed in the fish treated chronically with a mixture of pollutants than that in the fish treated with a factory effluent.
