Through a combination of diminishing health-care dollars and changing attitudes of the consuming public, new models of health care are being developed. Consumers are requesting preventative programs, and promising opportunities await the innovative health care provider. As clients move more toward self-care, health professionals will find new roles in the health care system. In the present economic arena, diagnosis related groups (DRGs) will require a mix of discharge planners and resource personnel; and the DRGs will have a major impact on pricing and cost containment in the health care industry. Even health education may become a fee service as the health industry changes and moves toward cleint-centered, self-care programs. (emc)
