This chapter explores how skills requirements have shifted over the past 10 years in light of the introduction of the District Health System in South Africa. The skills currently needed for successful, high-quality service delivery at district level, the impact of drain of skills on the health system, the progress in ensuring the confidence of health workers, planners and managers in rendering such services, and the areas where skills development are needed to be strengthened are discussed.
