Data on Swedish risk factors and lifestyles for the development of atherosclerotic disease over the period of the 1960s to 1980 are reviewed briefly and discussed. Public health adjustments were made nationally to reduce fat and increase polyunsaturated fatty acids in dairy and artificial dairy products. These measures, however, did not effect a reduction in ischemic heart disease incidence, probably because of an insufficient adoption of these adjustments by the general public. Recommendations are given for improving this situation. (wz)
