Eleven patients with end stage renal disease (creatinine clearance 5 ml/min) were treated with CAPD at the Renal Unit, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital. The age ranged from 19 to 44 years, 10 were male and one was female. Significant reduction in creatinine and BUN was achieved. The electrolytes, calcium and phosphorus were within normal range. The patients felt well and had good nutritional status. Therefore, CAPD is an effective treatment for end stage renal disease. The major side effect was peritonitis. Further development to control infection is underway, thus CAPD may gain even more acceptance in the area of renal replacement therapy in the very near future.
