Endoscopic papillotomy was developed mainly for bloodless removal of stones from the bile duct by CLASSEN1), KAWAI5) and SOHMA8) and their colleague in 1973. Recently, it has been used as a pre-treatment of endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage (ERBD) in malignant obstructive jaundice7). Under the circumstances, the authors performed endoscopic papillotomy on patients with carcinoma of the duodenal papilla as a jaundice reducing treatment and as a pre-treatment of laser irradiation. In these patients, endoscopic papillotomy was considered effective.
