Ultrastructural studies of the greater splanchnic nerves were done in 2 human fetuses of 149 and 220 mm C.-R. length (17th and 23rd week). In 17th week old fetus the nerve is mainly composed of bundles of unmyelinated fibers. The well myelinated fibers have as many as 8 lamellae in the myelin sheath. In fetus aged 23 weeks the myelinated fibers are seen to be at different stages of myelinogenesis. The thickest of them have up to 20 lamellae in the myelin sheath. Small ganglia and single nerve cells are present in the splanchnic nerves. Also synapses are observed.
