Recurrent suppurative cerebrospinal meningitis and encephalitis

The occurrence of recurrence of purulent meningoencephalitis was analysed in 17 cases with this disease of varying aetiology. In the studied group 61 recurrences developed. The most frequent cause was cranial trauma (52.9%). In 5 cases (29.4%) otitis media or sinusitis was present, and in 3 (17.7%) the cause of recurrences remained unknown. In most cases the recurrences ran a very severe, severe, or medium severe course, no mild cases were observed although this is the case in other forms of purulent meningoencephalitis. Secondary episodes are in an evidence of difficulties in eradication of the primary focus of infection during preceding treatment and recurrences are sometimes the only indication that the lesion lies at the base of the skull. One patient died during the 8th recurrence, the remaining ones were discharged from hospital in a good general condition.
