Chemical and bacterial hypersensitivity was studied in 100 patients with ulcus curis varicosum and chemical hypersensitivity could be detected in 68%. Patients with leg ulcer showed sensitivity mostly to Peruvian balsam, chloramphenicol and phenylbutazone. Tests with bacterial allergens showed positive delayed skin reaction in 75%. Patients with positive reaction gave positive response to E and G allergens in 62.7%. Bacteria corresponding to these allergens-Klebsiella, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris and Proteus mirabilis-could be isolated in 70.9% of leg ulcers. The similar ratios of isolability and hypersitivity to them suggest that these bacteria may play a part in the development of bacterial eczema around the ulcer.
