How to talk to young people about contraception

Since August 1998 there has been a counseling service in existence in Finland which has been providing advice to adolescents about sexual matters and life changes. Most young women and girls have questions about contraceptive methods. On the other hand, most males pose questions about sex and sexuality. An increasing number of young couples visit the clinic to obtain counseling. The issues of sexual health are also discussed as they relate to free time and hobbies. This organization also plans school sex education programs and cooperates with schools in general. Schools offer public information for groups, while individual visits to the clinic only deal with the issues of the individuals involved. During earlier practice, talks were held separately for the male and female, but now partners attend counseling together. Since the age at first menses is 12-13 years, providing relevant information and counseling is advised beginning at this age.
