A retrospective study of doxycycline in the treatment of genitourinary infections

A retrospective study was conducted to assess the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, and Mycoplasma sp in patients with suspected genital infection, and to assess the efficacy of doxycycline and other current antibiotic therapies. Over a three-year period, 1,048 records of patients (64% female; 36% male) were reviewed. C. trachomatis, U, urealyticum, or Mycoplasma hominis was found in 39% of the men and 49% of the women. Other pathogens included Gardnerella vaginalis (in 21%), Candida albicans (in 12%), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (in 4%), and Trichomonas vaginalis (in 1%). Doxycycline eradicated C. trachomatis in 88% of patients, U. ureolyticum in 87%, and M. hominis in 95%. Eradication rates with erythromycin were 91%, 71%, and 100% and with tetracycline, 88%, 92%, and 80%, respectively.
