The small intestinal biopsy procedure using a biopsy capsule is often time consuming and troublesome in children. Since 1970, 508 such biopsy procedures have been performed at the paediatric department of Haukeland Hospital in Bergen. Before 1976 we failed to obtain a biopsy in 12 out of 273 cases (4.3%), whereas failures occurred in 4 out of 235 cases after 1976 (1.7%), using the paediatric-size Watson capsule. Lately, the technique has been modified, using a PVC tube with a wire mandrin. This allows better manipulation of the capsule, and enables us to reach the pylorus within few minutes. If the pyloric sphincter has been relaxed with metoclopramide chloride, passage to the duodenum can easily be achieved.
