A strain of Escherichia coli which does not bind naturally to human lymphocytes was identified, coated with monoclonal anti-light chain antibody, and used for the enumeration of B lymphocytes in a rosetting technique. This produced results which compared favourably with those obtained in an indirect immunofluorescence technique and could be combined with a sheep red blood cell rosetting technique for the simultaneous enumeration of B and T cells in peripheral blood.
