Experience with total condylar knee prostheses

A series of 95 patients underwent 118 total condylar knee arthroplasties from March 1976 to September 1982. 15 patients died or were lost to follow-up, so that only 80 patients (97 knees) were evaluated. The etiology of the disease in 74% was osteoarthritis, in 15% rheumatoid arthritis and in 11% mixed. The patients were evaluated according to the Hospital for Special Surgery scoring system. The average follow-up was 4.5 years, with a range of 2-8.5 years. The preoperative score was 48 and the post-operative score 80: in 85% of the patients the results were rated as excellent or good. Pain was eliminated in 95% of the cases.
