A course of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) at a schedule recommended for the treatment of human filariasis, i.e. 300 mg/day for 12 days, affected the distribution of lipids in rats; there was marginal variation in protein levels but carbohydrates were unaffected. The lipid changes were most marked in the heart, followed by brain, kidney and adipose tissue. In the heart, phospholipids, sterol and triglycerol levels rose by 16, 19 and 70% respectively, suggesting that care should be taken when DEC is prescribed to patients with cardiac disorders.
