Iron metabolism was studied in young males with the use of 59Fe. The levels of serum iron, transferrin and ferritin were evaluated with the radioimmunoassay. Latent iron deficiency was detected in 50-80% of subjects. Total radiometry enables diagnosing latent iron deficiency earlier than evaluation of blood ferritin levels. About a half of the total amount of iron assimilated in the human body is included into the newly synthesized red blood cells.
