Contribution of M-mode echocardiography to the diagnosis of auricular myxomas

The echocardiografic findings in 6 patients with atrial myxoma (left-sided in 5 and right-sided in one) are reported. Left-sided tumours showed: a mass of stratified echoes behind anterior mitral valve leaflet (all cases), abnormal echoes in left atrium (4), reduction of the mitral E-F slope (4), diastolic mitral valve vibration (3) and abnormal early diastolic movement of posterior aortic wall (3). The right atrial myxoma showed stratified echoes behind anterior tricuspid leaflet and within the right ventricle, as well as abnormal interventricular septal motion. After surgical removal of myxoma all patients had a favourable course.
