Evaluation of serum concentrations of FSH, LH, testosterone and prolactin correlated with the cytomorphologic pathology of infertile human semen

Semen analyses were performed in subfertile men to determine the following main seminologic parameters: sperm density, motility, viability, and percent normal morphologic forms. The foregoing parameters were correlated with each other and with normal and pathologic levels of serum FSH, LH, testosterone and prolactin. Sperm motility grade III plays a fundamental role in establishing fertility and is a more representative parameter of fertilization potential than sperm density. There was a significant correlation between the fundamental parameters and sperm density. The results of the study showed a significant correlation between oligospermia and elevated serum FSH and prolactin levels. FSH values above the normal ranges were directly related to LH levels and inversely to sperm density. No changes in serum testosterone were observed when LH levels were above normal.
